NFC has large, almost never-ending caves filled with countless new ores. But I find that there's a big missed opportunity in NFC. There's an overhauled progression system for the player but no such progression system for the mobs the player fights.
I think that stronger AND smarter mobs should start spawning as you go deeper underground.
Some of the ideas I have are for variants of existing mobs and others are for brand new mobs.
Silverfish - I think Silverfish from modern should be ported into NFC but with some minor changes. Silverfish, like in modern, would not spawn naturally but would instead be spawned when naturally generated silverfish stone is broken. Silverfish stone looks identical to normal stone. Unlike in modern, this silverfish stone would spawn in all biomes and more frequently the deeper you go. High-tier pickaxes would be able to break silverfish stone without a silverfish even spawning. Awakening one silverfish will awaken other nearby ones. They drop 0-1 "Grub", which can be eaten for 1 heart of HP. It's not a very good food item but it is great for if you run out of food while deep underground. They have 8 HP.
Snail - Snails are giant snails, similar to how there's giant spiders in the game. They are very slow, but leave a trail of toxic slime behind them that decays over time. When the creature sees a player, the Snail will spit slimeball projectiles at them. These slimeballs do great amounts of damage. The slimeballs can be hit back, like a ghast's fireball. When attacked with a melee or ranged attack, they will hide in their shell. When inside their shell, they are invulnerable to most damage. If you continue to try to attack them with melee while they're inside their shell, they will release a large amount of toxic slime in a radius around them. While inside their shell, they can be continued to be damaged only if attacked with a tier 3 or higher pickaxe. They have 24 HP. Snails drop slimeballs. I was thinking that perhaps they could also drop their shell rarely, but I'm not sure what it should do.
Zombie Miner - Zombie Miners look like normal Zombies but dressed as a miner and with a more dull skin color. The pickaxe they wield varies between a copper one, a boron one, an iron one, and a steel one. Zombie Miners are smart enough that they can sense you through walls. They will use their pickaxe to attempt to dig paths towards you. They can only break blocks that the pickaxe they are wielding can destroy, but they'll avoid ores. Zombie Miners can awaken Silverfish to attack the player when they're digging. They are a bit faster than normal Zombies and they have 20 HP. Zombie Miners rarely drop leather gear and rarely drop ingots of whatever pickaxe they're wielding; either copper ingots, boron ingots, iron ingots, or steel ingots.
I'll update this list if I come up with any more mobs.
