A Note for Clarification
Hey there! This is a message from Logan and Roadhog360. We're the current maintainers of this mod and the people in charge of development. The original creator of this project, Zowja, developed it up to version 1.8.6_02 before he handed off development of the project to us. The vast majority of content, features, and guiding ideas of NFC were created by him, and to this day we're still trying to keep the project within the lines of his original vision.
The following text in the Introduction was written by Zowja to describe his inspiration and the general goals behind this project. It is still relevant to the current project today and describes the philosophy behind what we're working to accomplish to this day. However, to be clear, he's no longer the active dev. We are. And we hope we can continue to provide a fun and new experience for everyone following this project
INTRODUCTION
Greetings newcomer! I am Zowja, the creator of this mod. This mod is unique in the fact that it is not a mod for the modern game, rather it is a mod for the old version Beta 1.7.3. This is not an old mod laying around from 2011, but something that is active and updated today for Beta!
But... why Beta? If you played Old Minecraft, you know the game felt quite a bit different than it does now. Pre-Alpha, Alpha, and Beta had their own little quirks about them, but all generally had the same feel and atmosphere. At some point along the line, the feel of the game suddenly had a large shift that carries over into how the game feels now. This shift is seen by some people, including myself, as happening in update Beta 1.8, the "Adventure Update". Multiple things may have contributed to this shift, the faster pace of the game from sprinting and a higher focus on fighting, and/or the player base becoming a lot bigger, younger, and edgier, and/or the addition of creative mode suddenly unlocking everything in the game to everyone so then survival lost some of its feels, and/or the looks of the game becoming duller and more orange with the new torch lighting and textures with lower contrast, and/or something else I may have not mentioned. The reason why this mod is built upon Beta 1.7.3 is because of the wanting to recapturing some of the old feeling before all that came around. We like to consider it to be the "last good Old Minecraft update." Whether you used to play these versions back in the day or wish to experience a completely new feeling to Minecraft, we heavily encourage you to try out New Frontier Craft.
Now, originally, New Frontier Craft's intention was to really try and harp on the nostalgia chords, with its original slogan being "New Frontier Craft - The answer for your Nostalgia", but I've since discovered that I am a human being and cannot hit everyone's nostalgia for the old times perfectly. We all had something different about the game that we loved back then. What I can do is freshen up the old times with something new, a new vision for the game - a New Frontier - while keeping to the old roots of the game. This has resulted in something I see as beautiful, something more matured than Beta or modern, something that can bring people who enjoy modern versions back to experience old times, something that retains the ability to play on those feel chords again, something I prefer to play over Beta now - which is really quite something, as I really do love Beta. Hopefully this something I've created can be that something for you too
This mod should be considered as more of an overhaul, or even a new path of development for Minecraft, than just a simple mod. Think of something like Tekkit Classic. The Technic packs have always involved such large modification to the game that it feels like a game of it's own. This is, in general terms, what NFC is aiming to do, but having a larger focus on the old times and polish. I did not merely add new things to the game, but I've completely overhauled pieces of the game like ores and materials. This gives the feeling of being new to the game again, and also really matures how the game plays as I really try to refine the gameplay, yet stay within the framework of Beta to keep that atmosphere alive.
As of now, this project is far from complete. I have big ideas for the game and its future, but I've only completed one of four or five massive updates to the game and its mechanics. If you'd like to know more about development, I recommend you scroll back up the page and join the Discord Server!

A SLIGHTLY MORE IN-DEPTH FEATURE INTRODUCTION
In case you missed the link up above, go here to figure out how to install New Frontier Craft.
One thing that should be immediately noted is that New Frontier Craft is first and foremost built on top of Beta 1.7.3. Adventure mechanics like the hunger system, XP, and bosses are not present, and if they're ever added to the game they won't be anywhere close to the same form they are in modern.
Now let's get into the actual changes from Beta 1.7.3. The first and biggest change that has happened is the ore and metal system. The things you'll need to know to start is this:
Another thing I recommend looking at in the beginning is the list of crafting changes.
- Back in Beta, there were 6 ores you could find in the stone. In modern, that's now 8 with emeralds and netherite. In New Frontier Craft, there is 30 (31 if you include oil). Vanilla is a linear four tier progression with Wood -> Stone -> Iron -> Diamond. In New Frontier Craft, there are 6 tiers with multiple metals in each. More info on the materials of NFC can be found here newfrontiercraft.net/thread/52/materials
- Alongside looking up the quality of the materials added by NFC, it's recommended to take a look at the rarity and generation rules of the ores to a get a gist of where you should be looking to get various things within the game newfrontiercraft.net/thread/53/ores
A very important thing that was added in NFC is the Brick Oven. To make it, you need to create 8 Fired Brick blocks, which are created by smelting brick blocks in a furnace.
Once you've done that, these blocks need to be crafted in the same pattern as a furnace in order to create the Brick Oven. This block is a mixture of the crafting table and furnace. Wood-based products are either inefficient or don't work in this furnace. Normal coal and anthracite work far better.
This furnace is important for two reasons. Because it facilitates the creation of alloys such as bronze, brass, and steel. And , because it's used for the creation of stained glass, a shapeless recipe requiring 8 glass and one of the given dye that you are trying to apply to the glass.
Another relatively important thing to note in NFC is how slab and stair placement is changed. Like in modern, stairs and slabs can be placed upside-down. However, New Frontier Craft also introduces the ability to place a slab sideways. The orientation of the slabs is configurable through a new item added by NFC, the wrench, allowing you to change the direction and placement of the slabs even after the original placement of them. More information on this can be found on this page.
Caves have changed in New Frontier Craft. In general, there is an upper and lower cave section. I recommend not digging deeper until you are stable at tier 2. Also, caves like to go on forever. A famous rule of Minecraft is never dig straight down. A new rule in New Frontier Craft is never explore too deep. If you die deep in a cave, you are almost definitely not getting your stuff back. Even if you do not die, good luck finding your way back after going way too far. It's recommended if you get to this point to tunnel back up to the surface and mark your way back down to get to where you were, as it's unlikely you're ever gonna get back to where you were by going through the cave system again.
Another thing I recommend looking at in the beginning is the list of crafting changes.

Changes:
There have been quite a few crafting changes from vanilla.
Massive changes to caves. They just keep on going.
Some of the old textures are added back in.
A new, fuller look for grass.
Zombies now uncommonly drop a leather tunic or leather pants.
Mobs spawned from monster spawners do not drop anything.
Plants in general will grow slower, but not by much. I plan to make this slower yet.
Worlds are saved to "NFCSaves" in the Minecraft directory.
Trees cannot generate with just one log block under the leaves, it needs to be at least 2 now.
As mentioned earlier, stairs and slabs can be placed in various orientations.

FUTURE PLANS
Some of the planned future updates for New Frontier Craft are a heaven or "anti-nether" update, an industrial update, a combat update, an "adventure" update, and tons of other ideas we've got floating around between the devs that we'd love to see implemented (the specific order and times of which these updates will be released is to be determined).
These updates will be further elaborated on as they are developed and discussed with the community. If you want your ideas heard, scroll back up on this page and join the Discord!

DEVELOPER NOTES
It has taken three years to get New Frontier Craft to a stable and universally liked state. That said, it's finally ready for launch. In older versions of New Frontier Craft, the game was a good bit harder than it is now, making its appeal niche. Now its made to appeal more to everyone, and the way the game plays out feels a lot better and more chill.
So far, this mod has taken some influence from TerraFirmaCraft, as well as some QOL updates from the more modern versions. Notably, the planned v5.0.0 update is in a good amount inspired by a fusion of BetterThanWolves, Industrial Craft, and BuildCraft.
And as a TL;DR for everything on this page; The point of NFC is to be a new continuation of Minecraft starting at Beta 1.7.3, with us taking an alternate route to development than the one Mojang took with the adventure update and Beta 1.8. We hope you'll enjoy our route better than the one Mojang gave us
