Just thought I would point out that I found a cave to the right in the picture and it was filled to the top with oil, pretty cool, except for the fact that I can't place blocks where oil is currently present.
My guess is that according to the last picture, the oil pond underground spawned directly above the end of a cave system and decided to spawn the oil inside the empty cave spaces below it...I like it.
